HW 10-23

The Values Behind Conservative and Liberal Policy Positions

In our class today, we have examined the “political ideology” of conservatives and liberals in the United States. We did this by looking at the positions that each of these groups tend to take on a variety of public policy issues.

In out next class, we will explore the deeper values that conservatives and liberals hold that might explain why they take such different stands on policy issues facing our country. For example, what values lead many conservatives to want to continue using fossil fuels, and why do liberals want to switch rapidly to alternative sources of fuel? Or, what values lead conservatives to want to build a wall on the border with Mexico, and what values cause liberals to oppose this idea?

To prepare for this class, please do the following:

  1. To refresh your understanding of liberal and conservative stands on public policy issues, read:
  2. Then, based on your analysis of the policy positions above, make a list of 5-10 values that conservative seem to hold, and a list of 5-10 values that liberals seem to hold.
  3. In class, you will be part of an assigned group that will review and synthesize the lists that you bring to class.

This is not a Homework Brief, and you will not submit any work in class. However, you will be expected to contribute to the work of the group you will be assigned to, so please come to class prepared.
